Hanuman Films began life in June 2000 with the arrival of Paramount British Pictures in Cambodia for the making of Tomb Raider. Nick Ray, a long-time writer with Lonely Planet Publications and author of six guidebooks to Cambodia, and Kulikar Sotho, Executive Director of leading Cambodian travel agency Hanuman Tourism-Voyages, were chosen by Paramount to work as Location Manager and Line Producer respectively. Both Nick and Kulikar had already worked on documentaries and film scouts, but the arrival of such a major project propelled them into establishing a dedicated film servicing company, Hanuman Films.

Hanuman Films was formed with assistance and advice from Paramount British Pictures and initially included a third partner, Sam Breckman who later returned to production work in the UK. After a successful wrap on Tomb Raider, the first major international feature film to be shot in Cambodia since 1964, Kulikar and Nick decided to continue Hanuman Films as an independent servicing company covering the Mekong region. As word of Tomb Raider’s success in Cambodia spread, so too did the reputation of Hanuman Films as the company that would assure a smooth shoot in this hot, new location. Soon documentaries were approaching Hanuman Films for advice and assistance and before long celebrated international director Jean-Jacques Annaud visited Cambodia to seek locations for his latest film Two Brothers. By 2002, work on two major commercials enhanced the solid reputation of Hanuman Films as the company to work with on feature films and documentaries in Cambodia. First came a public service broadcast about landmines made by Warner Bros and later in the year a Dragon Air commercial, the first ever shot at the temples of Angkor.
